McCain Going to Kiss Ass for the Gun Vote

August22

I can’t say too much right now, but I thought you guys might be interested in this story about McCain hiring the former head of NRA-ILA for his presidential run.  The link goes to a post by Josh Sugarmann, head of VPC, which I think provides an interesting view from the other side.

“McCain Going to Kiss Ass for the Gun Vote”

As Sugarman chuckles over McCain’s troubles, his cronies plot to utterly destroy the 2A if they win the White House and Congress back.

That being the case, anything Sugerman says is nuanced towards that position, so I would take him with very low credit for accuracy in this case.

Both the major parties have been hit by McCain-Feingold, so there is no love lost there, either.

    Rivrdog,

I know who Josh Sugarmann is and I know his biases. I’m very well aware of all the major players on this issue.

That said, why would you give him low credit for accuracy? He’s reporting that McCain has hired Baker. That’s not up for debate. He was hired for his knowledge of and relationship with the gun/sportsmen’s groups. What’s innaccurate about him information on that? Do you think Baker was hired for any other reason? If so, I’d love to hear it.

I’m just shocked at how much weight Josh Sugarman has put on over the years.

As for McCain, I never really viewed him as a hardened enemy as guns and more as a weasly politician who will do (and say) what it takes to get elected.

he gambled and thought the gun show route was the way to go. My understanding is he has now learned otherwise

He’s gonna have to go a lot further than a kiss on the ass if he wants my vote.

The man is against private gun ownership (with possible exceptions, like for Rosie O`Donnel’s bodyguards), and perhaps even worse (?) free speech. Hmm, the first two amendments: can the rest be far behind?

He seems to be a nice guy and intelligent, just a bit warped in outlook.

    Bitter,

One fact does not a truth-teller make. As we both know, the whole VPC thing is built on a heavy foundation of lies and unsupportable statistics.

Sugarman and the whole VPC are still liars, in my book, even if he reported this issue straight up.

I didn’t much like McCain, and certainly disliked his support for campaign “reform” and for background checks for gun shows. But if Baker can straighten him out on the latter (it’s as simple as — here are the Dept of justice surveys showing only 1.7% of criminal guns come from gunshows, for Pete’s sake, gun shows are full of off duty cops and gunnies who like most cops, you might as well try an illegal buy at an FOP convention) he’s at least halfway to respectability.
The question is how much weight Jim Baker is given. Is he gonna be a gun-type Carl Rove, or just a guy given some tasks?

That is an interesting question, Dave. Let’s just say I’m working to find that answer out as well. :)

Rivrdog, I would normally agree with any assumption that Sugarmann is lying, but since I actually bothered to read the link, I won’t here. I’m not any more likely to believe him when he starts off on his gun banning agenda simply because I found one factual article by him. However, calling him a liar for this particular piece would be just as wrong. Sometimes you can learn from your enemies.

As for McCain just being “a weasly politician who will do (and say) what it takes to get elected”, I agree, Countertop. However, I also will hold it against him at the polls because what happens when we have another Columbine or some sort or attack and going after guns looks like the route to go again? With the potential for a Democratic or at least very weakened Republican Congress, serious damage could be done before he figures out it’s not a good way to go again. Not to mention, the campaign finance reform is a deal breaker for me. I like my First Amendment as much my Second.

To think our GOP choice may be McCain or Guliani. : (

If someone could just persuade Condi to run! She’d win in a %^%&%ing heartbeat. Our first black president, first woman president, a conservative, and VERY progun. She’d probably get every state except Massachusetts, and might even have a shot there.

  11. On August 23rd, 2006 at 12:53 pm Bitter Says:

Actually, I don’t think she could win. I hate to admit it, but there are still enough Southerners who would stay home that it would tilt the election to the Dems. While her positions are correct, her gender, race and marital status aren’t for many. I know this because I’m related to many of them. :(

Bewteen McCain, Guliani, Clinton, and Richardson, I’ll go Richardson. Wonder is he has a shot? ;)

Still not perfect, but better on guns than any of them. He pushed for CCW in NM, and got his own CHL after.

The alternative is 4 more years of President Clinton, with an option for 4 more.

Dunno about them, but I can’t take 16 years of the Presidents Clinton. Too much is too much.
