Firearms Regulation, International Law and Human Rights

October7

Prof. Joyce Lee Malcolm, George Mason University School of Law – I love that she’s jumping right into a discussion that involves recent school shootings. She said she’s going to talk about how other countries respond to major incidents. She’s highlighting some of the more outrageous situations where Brits are letting criminals and troublemakers run free while victims are punished. She’s doing a summary of the major incidents and their response. She was in Toronto when they started announcing the gun registry. I love her. She’s covering the ways they treat gun owners like worse than criminals. It’s like Massachusetts. How did I not meet this woman when I was in Massachusetts? Some statistics about guns in the UK. Points out that no matter how large a police force is that not everyone will have protection at all times. Someone got out of a life sentence after 15 months because of overcrowding. Definitely getting a lot of audience response with her stories. Something we all know that gun crime isn’t being stopped by the outrageous gun control laws. Many examples of how it didn’t work. Also all sorts of judicial system horrors like criminals suing victims if they get hurt. A caution that anything enacted after these shootings should be carefully considered. In questions, she said many of the guns used by criminals appearing in the UK are coming from the Eastern Europe.

David Kopel, Research Director, Independence Institute, The Volokh Conspiracy, Hottie – He is so freaking hot. If you’re a law student, go work for him at the Independence Institute. Shit. Hi Dave, thanks for doing the shout out to the blogger(s). (I don’t think there’s another one. I’m the only one with a computer open right now.) What I love is that he’s already got material on his website. As I mentioned earlier, this makes it much easier to follow. He’s really hot. He’s got UN horror stories to follow up Joyce Lee Malcom’s UK horror stories. I don’t know how the lawyers react to this, but it really just makes me want to go buy more guns or ammo. I didn’t notice that the UN Human Rights Commission had changed its name to Human Rights Council. Still has such friends of human rights like Cuba and Saudi Arabia serving. He’s pointing out how some argue that there’s a human right to gun control. He’s still hot. He’s bringing up the debate about whether or not there’s a right to self defense at all, leaving aside the issue of the use of arms. He’s brilliant, too. I can’t listen to it right now, but I noticed that on his website, he has the mp3 of his speech at the Gun Rights Policy Conference called The United Nations versus Self Defense. Still hot. I, on the other hand, am a little chilled. He’s got so much information on his website, I think you need to go reference his writing because I can’t type fast enough. But the history of self defense writing and thinking is very interesting. “Self defense is not just a right, but it’s a foundation for society.” Amen. And smoking hot.

UPDATE: Some people are a little confused because this is random commentary. I was liveblogging an event and this was one topic. For full coverage, visit the Sweet, Sexy Gun Talk archive.

When you said that Prof. Malcolm is becoming involved in the discussion, were you referring to a blog or her recent publications?

No, I was live blogging the NRA’s legal symposium. If you look at the front page or even just the gun category, you’ll see that I did a post for each topic discussed as well as a couple of summary posts.

Sorry, Bitter. I followed a link from Instapundit and didn’t realize that you were liveblogging, thinking instead that you were referring to something online.
