Well, I hate to come to Joy Behar’s defense, but you have to listen to her whole spiel here to get what she was trying to say.

She was saying that her experience on the radio was like date rape because first the callers are sweet and nice, “oh hi, I think you’re fantastic!” and then when she’s got her guard down, they start calling her names. It’s not the names that’s like date rape, it’s the fact that they start off nice, then attack.

It was an extreme exaggeration on her part, obviously, but at least try to get the context of her comparison.

As you know, I’m nowhere near experienced enough a prosecutor to have tried a rape case. But I’ve watched colleagues do it, and they’re brutal. My senior adviser within the office is the head of our sex crimes unit: he said he lost three victims to suicide the first two months he was there. For anyone to compare a mere verbal attack to something so horrific demonstrates a level of either ignorance or callousness that’s beneath contempt.

Date rape, as used by rape survivors and all those I’ve talked to about such subjects (usually in a larger context of self defense and guns), is a rape that happens on a date. It’s not some guy jumping out of the bushes, but it doesn’t mean that it’s not forced.

If you’re currently using that term to mean false allegations of rape by someone who regrets it later, please stop because you’re doing a disservice to those who actually experienced a very severe attack.

Well, remember, she said date raped, which as I understand the current abuse of English, is not being held down and raped, but being browbeaten or guilted into having sex you later regret, or having sex while too inebriated to “really” consent.

The analogy with insulting callers is less stupid when you distinguish the two, but still stupid, because insulting callers are a well known, predictable, inevitable part of having a radio show, and thus not really even like “date rape”.

(Me, I’ve always thought “date rape” trivialised real rape by comparison, rather than – as the users intend – making drunken sex or guilt-tripping sex seem more serious or rape-like.)
