I Don’t Understand Who Wins in this One

December3

Honestly, can someone explain to me who benefits if this bill passes?

[Michigan] House Bill 5882 creates the Coercive Abortion Prevention Act. Its purpose is to prohibit the putative father of a pregnant woman’s child from coercing or intimidating the woman into terminating her pregnancy. While preventing violence or threats of violence against pregnant women is an admirable goal, the proposal goes way beyond this by interfering with constitutionally protected personal prerogatives.

The proposal actually makes it a crime for a man to “change or attempt to change an existing housing or cohabitation arrangement” with a pregnant significant other, to “file or attempt to file for a divorce” from his pregnant wife or to “withdraw or attempt to withdraw financial support” from a woman whom he has been supporting — if it is determined that the man is doing these things to try to pressure the woman to terminate her pregnancy.

The article gives an example where the baby is just going to add more pressure to a relationship and the guy can’t possibly support the family and ultimately decides to leave.  It’s not the ideal situation, but outlawing it?  No way.

And let’s say it’s the worst case scenario where there’s no pressure other than the father doesn’t want to be a father and tells his wife that it’s either him or the baby.  Is he an ass?  Yes, but not an outlaw.

Not to mention this takes the concept of trapping a man into a relationship with pregnancy to a whole new level.  Marry me or I’ll say you tried to break up with me because of it and then you go to jail (if she’s a minor).  Look, I fully recognize that women bear a much larger burden in reproduction than men ever will, but that doesn’t mean we get to lock guys up in jail for it.

Even better, what if he does the math and realize there’s no way he could be the father?  He could be threatened to stay in the relationship.

The good news is that even NOW recognizes that this bill is a problem and is campaigning against it.  Of course the Right to Life group, while not actively campaigning for it that I can see, still seems to be supporting it with their published talking points.  How is it that the conservatives became anti-men’s rights and the feminists are now campaigning on the behalf of men’s rights?

It passed in July, but the Senate hasn’t acted, which is a good thing.

But how is that a win for women, George? Being in a miserable relationship with someone who doesn’t want to be with you is hardly a win.

How do they come up with this crap? And how do you get an entire group of people coming up with this crap without more than a few asking the same question?

I was being sardonic, or thought I was.

It’s not a win for women. It’s an added incentive to a make a bad mistake that all too many women already make (girls actually).

If they pass this they better increase the budget for Children’s Protective Services, Battered Women’s Shelters and Suicide Hotlines.

It’s called being married. (cynical grin).
