The Final NRA Endorsement Post

January25

I’ve already done two endorsements this year. Sorry this has been broken up, but as a non-voting member, I didn’t see the full ballot until very recently. So far, we have Sandy Froman and Carol Bambery. The other two full endorsements are Susan Howard and Bob Barr.

Susan Howard is a so-called celebrity director. However, I suspect those who remember her days as a more widely know celebrity are not common on this blog, except for Bitchy Mom. (She got the first three seasons of Dallas on dvd this Christmas. I wish I had a video of her reaction, it was great.) Since her Dallas days, Susan has dedicated herself to our cause. She shows up to meetings, leads committees and really deserves to be recognized as a grassroots leader rather than a celebrity director. She’s down to earth, and certainly someone you can rely on to stand up and promote what’s good about gun owners, gun ownership and the clear right to bear arms. There are few men or women who present a better face for gun owners. Her semi-celebrity status only helps bring that to more people, which I hope we can all agree is a good thing.

Bob Barr, aside from being a former member of Congress who remains proactive on the gun issue, is suing Mike Bloomberg’s ass. Of course, that’s not the only reason to support him. However, it’s a damn good one. ;)

Dave Hardy has his round up of blogosphere endorsements. Gun Law News is bringing special attention to the Neal Knox crowd endorsements, with the only criteria apparently being not part of the “establishment.” While I have my problems with the establishment, I consider it a little more mature to consider what each individual director or potential director can bring to the table. If it’s problems, then don’t vote for that person. If it’s something positive (and not being on the board now isn’t a positive, it’s neutral), then vote for them.

That said, I also disagree with others on celebrities and politicians. I don’t believe the board should be made up of too many, but I believe they fit into a role that the board should represent. I understand concerns about making sure true activists are well represented, which is vital as well. See, NRA has many different interests and programs. Each of those should have an expert or other representation of sorts on the board. There’s plenty of room with 76 directors. Eddie Eagle, competitions, politics, legal analysis and activism, grassroots outreach, media savvy, membership recruitment, law enforcement, hunting…there’s all sorts of things that should be monitored by the board’s role of setting overall policy and working with staff to make those policies happen.

With that in mind, here are a few other people who might be worthy of at least enough of your time to read their bios. (Though these aren’t official Bitchy endorsements. No offense to them, I just don’t want to give too many endorsements. Four is enough for this year.)

Tom King – He’s an activist from New York.

Bill Brewster – He’s a former Congressman who now lobbys, also a Democrat. Could be useful to have that cred on the board right now.

Ted Nugent – He attracts members. Even when he’s making people roll their eyes, he keeps the issue and the organization. We may not agree with all he represents, but unless he’s out killing people in cold blood, the press is worth it.

James Dark – He’s an activist from Texas.

Larry Craig – A Senator from Idaho who also sometimes keeps the organization’s name in the news.

Harold Volkmer – One word: FOPA. At least the better parts.

While not being part of the establishment is indeed a factor in our endorsements for the NRA Board, that is by no means our “only criteria.”
The three candidates we specifically endorsed – Jenkins, J. Nugent, and Jones – are exceptionally qualified – two are very active pro-gun state legislators and the third has led one of the most aggressive and effective state grassroots organizations in the country.
What’s mature about endorsing candidates who are absolutely positively going to be elected like Sandy Froman, Bob Barr, or Susan Howard – all quality Directors. The only two candidates you mention who face any chance of losing their seats are Tom King – whom we endorsed last year as a new face – and Carol Bambrey – who is an intelligent hard worker and should be retained, but as noted, new faces was part of our endorsement criteria.
I really enjoy your site when I get a chance to visit. — Jeff Knox
