Bradys Intent on Disrupting Memorial Service
Word this morning is that regardless of whether the memorial service is going on or not, and regardless of whether they get a permit to interrupt, the Brady Campaign is planning to crash the campus with their political message.
Peter Hamm, spokesman for the Brady Campaign to Stop Gun Violence, said the group has been working with Tech students on the protest. It would involve a 32-person “lie in” at noon April 16, the one-year anniversary of shootings on the campus that resulted in the deaths of 32 people plus the shooter.
The Brady Campaign sent out a media advisory last Thursday announcing the event, planned in conjunction with the gun control group ProtestEasyGuns.com. Hamm said the gun-control groups had not discussed the event with the university, but he was initially discouraged by what he saw as a hard-line stance by the university against issuing a permit. He said this morning that the event would go ahead as scheduled — permit or no permit.
That’s just heartless. In this article, the University spokesman even sympathizes with their position, but he sticks to his point that this service is not about making the political point.
Hincker said the gun control issue is an important one and the university understands the rights of people to express themselves, but April 16 is a time for the community to heal and reflect on the lives of people lost a year ago.
“April 16 is, to us, truly a solemn day,” he said. “It’s a day of remembrance.”
UPDATE: Even the student body has asked for a little respect:
Some students have expressed concern about protesters on campus April 16.
Tech’s Student Government Association passed a resolution Tuesday night asking protesters “to respect the Virginia Tech community’s wish to peacefully embrace the university day of remembrance by holding their demonstrations on a different date.”
Sophomore Alyson Boyce, one of the sponsors of the resolution, said it isn’t meant to discourage protests in general.
“We just want April 16 to be a day to honor our friends,” she said.
Glad to know that the Brady Campaign is willing to send a nice “F- You!” to the student body during their memorial service.
Honestly, can’t they have a little respect? It was bad enough that they had the Virginia Tech themed fundraiser before the bodies were even recovered that day. Do they think they can’t get press attention unless they are as obnoxious as PETA?
No obviously related posts.

It would take one of these where the non-permit carrying protesters having the living you-know-what beaten out of them to stop this stupidity. Even better if friends and family did it instead of the campus or local cops. Sometimes it just takes a good whoopin’ to straighten out people, or remind them about a sense of good taste, or shame, about their public actions.
[...] that they won’t be allowed to dance in the blood of dead college students. But no worries, they’re just going to crash the party instead. Stay classy, [...]
[...] Never mind that the student body at Tech and the University administration has asked for people to quietly respect their wishes on the 16th; the Brady Bunch sounds like they’re coming anyway. [...]
Contrast the Brady Campaign’s plans with what the NRA did with their Colorado meeting after the Columbine shootings.
The NRA (unable for legal reasons to cancel the meeting, IIRC) canceled events that were scheduled but not strictly required, and held the remaining meetings without fanfare.
But that’s because the NRA isn’t run by jackhats.
VTEch blocks Brady protest!…
While the opening post suggests that this entry should be more autobiographical, the issue raised by the Richmond Times Dispatch April 8 is far too relevant to be ignored. As noted in the cited article, the administration of the Virginia Polytechnic …
You are correct, Sigivald. They had to have the meeting by law.
All this does is openly prove what’s been obvious to many for a long time; that the Brady Bunch dont care one tiny bit about people, no matter how much they claim otherwise.
So by all means Bradys, show the nation what kind of people, for lack of a better term, you truly are on 16 April.
