Supporting the Olympians, Just Not with an Ugly Button

July21

I noticed that USA Shooting is doing a campaign to get people to link to their site for coverage of the Olympic shooting competitions and winners.  Now, I’m all for covering these things, as I have in the past.  (I think I usually bitch about how we’re really the only country that allows civilian ownership of so many guns, and yet we have lost in several sports.  I also note how so many of our shooters come from anti-gun states.)  However, I won’t be posting their little button this year.

Why?  Is it because I’m not supporting our Olympic competitors this year?  No.  It’s because the button is ugly.   So, I’ll try to remember to link regularly.  I do encourage you guys to follow the coverage.  I also encourage USA Shooting to offer up better web buttons.

Oh, and to market them to bloggers, not just gun stores, as implied by the writeup NSSF did.  No offense to gun shop owners, but we have many more eyeballs looking at us than they do their websites with the exception of the big sporting goods outlets.

But the button is so, Seventies. What a lovely retro color to use.

Hehe. I can’t say I recall the Seventies. A little before I was born. :)

I may end up making my own, but I just wanted to draw a little attention to the way you really do a web campaign: multiple buttons, multiple sizes, and multiple messages. The beauty of the web is allowing people to customize, and the easier you make it, the more success you will have.

I’m tempted to go through the photos of the female shooters, swipe them, do a slide show of them and make a “Girl Power!” themed button. That could be fun. And very Spice Girls ’90s. :)
