Adventures in Cooking – Smoothie Edition

August3

Today I decided to make myself a smoothie.  About two weeks ago, I did one more round of my new favorite game: Do we really need this?  Will we really use it?  I pulled out all the pieces to Sebastian’s blender and my blender.  We did the side-by-side comparison and mine squeaked by as the winner.  So off to Goodwill goes Sebastian’s blender.  (We can’t sell stuff here since Craigslist Philly seems to be useless.)

And so today, I pull out my blender to make my delicious banana strawberry smoothie.  There was smoke.  That’s not good.  So I stopped and unplugged the blender.  Yup, there was definitely smoke.  Oh, and the kitchen windows don’t open very well, so there wasn’t much of an opportunity to air out the kitchen.  It wasn’t smoke-filled or anything, it just had that ‘appliance burning’ smell.

So, got any recommendations for new blenders?  I have all this fruit for smoothies right now and I don’t want it to go to waste.  We need a new one.

    Huh? You’re kidding, right?

Well, if you need it NOW, go to a drugstore or supermarket and get a $15 one. Or see if Goodwill still has Sebastian’s and for how much.

Otherwise go to one of many stores (hardware, electrical, appliance, etc.). Or online: Amazon, Froogle.com, etc. Not sure I”d go with listings on Craigslist or the likes of EBay, but maybe.

And if you are really fond of smoothies and other drinks requiring a blender, restaurant-supply sites (e.g. AceMart) will sell you the types used specifically for them – but the orices have a definite ouch factor.
