Blogger, Meet Activist
Dear Gun Blogosphere,
We speak mostly to an echo chamber (hello…helloooooo) and really serve to rally a constituency. But how do you win elections? I’m going to be all anti-interwebz and say it’s not online. It’s in the ground game.
Sebastian talked about our sign retaliation efforts last night, and that’s in addition to other activism bloggers are taking into the real world:
- Peter has become quite the phone banker in Wisconsin;
- Caleb spent an afternoon doing a precinct walk in Indiana;
- Bruce also spent a weekend afternoon walking around the neighborhood and driving around town in New Hampshire.
- JR went to knock on doors in Texas.
What do 3 out of 4 of those have in common? They live in states that could swing the election. JR is the exception to the rule.
So what about those of you who can be comfortable just as a blogger and not feel like you need to worry about making phone calls or hitting the streets of your neighborhood? How can you the blogger in a nice comfortable state help out if you aren’t needed so much in your hometown?
Easy, send in supplies. I’m being serious. We need them.
Buy a batch of bumper stickers, buy some yard signs. Send them to activists in swing states. We can’t hold on to them up here, and that’s great.
But, just like those grumpy old men who give up their NRA memberships because they didn’t get their free hat fast enough, we can’t risk having voters lose enthusiasm for helping the campaign because they can’t get a sign in their yard or a bumper sticker on their car.
We need your help. If your time is worth a lot, then donate some materials to those of us in battleground states. Sebastian and I have already put up some money for this fight. We couldn’t keep our hands on bumper stickers, so we just put in an order for 50 so he would have something to hand out and get on the backs of cars when he speaks at gun clubs this week.
Or if you don’t have an activist contact in a state, then pick a couple Congressional races that are tight and donate to the more pro-gun candidate. Our district was decided by 1,500 votes, a number we can definitely turn around to get the gun banner out of office. There are many more across the country. The dollars they bring in during this last month could buy a radio ad campaign, a billboard, more yard signs, or pay for dinner for their activists who burn the midnight oil.
Blogging is useful in its own ways, but activists win elections. So blogger, meet activist. Now help them.
No obviously related posts.

[...] Bitter talks about gun bloggers as activists. [...]
The rabbit hole is deeper, I’ve since done a phone bank night, as well as another precinct walk. I’m also doing a lot of political stuff at pistol matches I go to; talking to the local club guys about politics and trying to pawn off all these “McCain/Palin” signs I have.
I’ve been working the phones at McCain headquarters here for the last 6 weeks (but I’m taking a break today).
